Exception is for instance the count, there are the offspring hereditary counts and hereditary countess (or countess). In the case of dukes, landgraves, electors and simple princes, however, the child may magnificently describe itself as a prince / princess.

The Origin and Evolution of Earl and Countess Titles

TToday, the title of earl indicates a noble rank that falls below marquises but above viscounts. However, the term earl has a long history that has spanned various countries. Over the centuries, the title has encompassed a number of stations, including chieftains, landed rulers of shires, and nobility.

Etymological Origins of the Title

The title of earl has Anglo-Saxon origins, being notably similar to “jarl,” the Scandinavian title for chieftain. The title was lost over time in many countries that initially used it. For example, in Scandinavia, where the title sometimes meant prince as well as chieftain, earl was only used until the Middle Ages; then, it was replaced with duke. In other countries, the title was adopted around the same time. In Britain, earl started to be used in place of count, a nobility term with continental roots, during the Middle Ages. In still other countries, ranks similar to count and earl existed under other names. For example, in Japan, Hakushaku denoted this rank. Earl also bears linguistic similarities to words used in neighboring countries and cultures. The term is similar to Heruli, the name of an East Germanic tribe, and “erilaz,” a runic word. Earl also resembles the early Norse term “eril,” which was a term used for leaders.

Earls, Counts, and Countesses

Counts and earls share the same rank, which is why the wives of earls are called countesses. The nobility titles of count and countess, which have Norman origins, were not introduced until after the Norman conquest of England. The reasons that the title earl was eventually chosen over count are not known. It is possible that the invading Normans abandoned count in favor of earl because count was phonetically similar to a profane word, but this is only speculation.

Earls and Land Holdings

Today, earls do not necessarily hold land or rule shires like it still is with Scottish peerage. However, in the past, earls governed shires and received one-third of the revenue generated in their shires. The naming conventions for earls were fairly relaxed. An earl’s title might have been based on any of the following things:

• A county town in the shire
• Another well-known place within the shire
• His family name

It was less typical for an earl to be addressed by family name, but this may have occurred when earls had limited land holdings in their shires. If an earl held land in a shire that already was designated to another earl, he might have received a title referring to land near his property. For example, the earls of Oxford primarily owned property in Essex, but they could not be titled accordingly, since other nobles already held the title Earl of Essex.

The word baron can be traced to the Late Latin word “baro,” which refers to a male servant, mercenary, or soldier. The word “barus” in Salic and Alemannic Law can also be traced to the modern word baron, and the word barus also refers to a mercenary or male of a similar social rank.

The first instance of the word baroness was traced to Gaulish documents discovered in the first century. Initially, a female baron was misinterpreted as translating to “dunce” due to the Latin word bāro, which directly translates to “simpleton.” Others theorize that the word baroness was actually derived from an unknown Celtic source, but there is not ample evidence to support the claims.

The elected representatives later evolved into the Knights of the Shire, and they were elected by the County Courts. A definite distinction was made between barons and common men, and the system developed by Knights of Shire and the presiding sheriff was the predecessor of the House of Commons. Letters of patent is practically the only method used to create baronies in modern times, and baronies no longer directly relate to land-holding individuals. Titles of prestige and power associated with feudal barony became increasingly obsolete, and they were officially converted into baronies by writ due to the Abolition Act of 1660.

Additionally, feudal baronies became obsolete without the use of legal force after the Modus Tenendi Parliamenta of 1419, the Tenures Abolition Act of 1660, the Feudal Tenure Act of 1662, and the Fines and Recoveries Act of 1834 were implemented. All baronies became baronies of free socage in which monetary rent payment was required.

Baronies in 20th Century England and Scotland

In the 20th century, Britain introduced the concept of non-hereditary titles of peerage and prestige, or life peers. To date, all individuals with this distinction have been given the title of baron or baroness. However, hereditary peers are to be addressed as “the Noble Lord” in accordance with tradition as well as non-hereditary peers. The Scottish nobility title of baron is typically used when a landed family does not have possession of a United Kingdom peerage title of higher prestige or rank. Barons and baronesses have a rich history that will likely continue to evolve beyond the 21st century in the United Kingdom.

The History and Significance of Duke and Duchess Titles

Duke and duchess titles conventionally are given to monarchs who rule over a duchy or to high-ranking nobles. The title of duke traditionally was recognized as the highest of all nobility titles, aside from those titles granted to ruling monarchs. The title has a long history, originating as the Latin “dux,” which means leader. In Rome, this term was first used for military commanders, particularly German and Celtic ones, who lacked official ranks. It later evolved to describe the top military commander of a province. The modern “duke” is based on the French title “duc,” stemming from the same Latin “dux.”
